Il y a 140 ans, le 25 octobre 1881, naissait le peintre et sculpteur espagnol Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Dans les dernières années de sa vie, un hasard a fait que la DS 19 historique du journaliste Mejido, alors jeune, a été peinte de sa propre main par l’artiste en 1958. Depuis toujours, la fascination pour l’art est profondément enracinée dans l’ADN de DS Automobiles et vit dans les partenariats et les modèles actuels.
La marque parisienne haut de gamme DS Automobiles a toujours été étroitement liée à la scène artistique. Cela se traduit aujourd’hui, entre autres, par un partenariat avec le Louvre et également par une étroite coopération avec des artistes artisans qui travaillent avec les designers DS au DS Design Studio Paris pour transposer les éléments artistiques dans les modèles actuels. L’histoire du jeune journaliste Mejido, dont la DS 19 a été peinte de sa propre main par Pablo Picasso en 1958, montre que cet amour de l’art est profondément enraciné dans l’ADN de la marque.
L’histoire qui se cache derrière la photo de la DS peinte remonte à 1955. Un jeune journaliste mexicain du nom de Mejido vivait en France et tentait, à l’hiver 1958, d’obtenir une exclusivité unique : une interview de Pablo Picasso, le brillant peintre espagnol. Celui-ci, banni par la dictature de Franco, vivait à l’époque sur la Côte d’Azur.
Sachant que Picasso n’accordait que très rarement des interviews, le jeune et intrépide Mejido imagina un stratagème : il se présenta à la porte de „La Californie“, la célèbre villa du peintre à Antibes, au nom du „Centro Republicano Español de México“. Cette organisation aidait les gens à fuir et accueillait d’innombrables exilés espagnols dans le pays. Pablo Picasso était un partisan avoué de la République espagnole et a donc accepté de donner l’interview.
Pour son voyage sur la Côte d’Azur, Mejido avait réussi à emprunter une DS 19 bleue flambant neuve, avec laquelle il se présenta en compagnie de quelques amis de Picasso. Ce dernier fut surpris par l’enthousiasme de son jeune visiteur, qui affirma avoir été envoyé en France par des Espagnols exilés au Mexique pour l’interviewer.
Pendant l’interview, Picasso a pris congé pendant quelques heures avant de revenir pour continuer à parler de politique et d’art. „Je n’ai jamais cessé de rêver ou de peindre“, a ensuite expliqué le peintre au journaliste, l’invitant à le suivre. Celui-ci n’en a pas cru ses yeux lorsqu’il a vu „Les guirlandes de la paix“ peintes sur la page de la DS 19. L’œuvre représentait une famille, des fleurs et un arbre. Devant le journaliste médusé, Picasso a signé son œuvre sur l’une des ailes.
La scène a été photographiée par l’une des personnes présentes et, aujourd’hui encore, Mejido conserve de nombreuses photos de la DS, de Picasso et du groupe d’amis qui ont fait partie de cet événement artistique inhabituel et aujourd’hui historique.
De retour à Paris, Mejido a acheté la DS pour 1.000 dollars et l’a immédiatement revendue à une galerie d’art parisienne pour 6.000 dollars. Depuis, on a perdu la trace de la voiture et le journaliste suppose qu’elle doit se trouver jusqu’à aujourd’hui entre les mains d’un collectionneur privé.
Les photos de la DS ont été envoyées à Josep Palau i Fabre, un ami du peintre et directeur de la Fondation Picasso à Barcelone, qui a confirmé l’authenticité des photos et du tableau. Même Rafael Inglada, le biographe de Picasso, a déclaré que la photo de la voiture avait bien été prise dans la palmeraie à côté de la villa „La Californie“.
DS en 2021 : des liens étroits avec le monde des arts
Même 63 ans plus tard, la marque DS n’a pas perdu son amour pour l’art. Au contraire : la marque premium parisienne est étroitement liée à la scène par de nombreux partenariats. Avec les modèles spéciaux DS 7 Crossback Louvre et DS 3 Crossback Louvre, DS vient de présenter deux éditions spéciales uniques qui allient raffinement, luxe et art. Mais les détails soignés et l’artisanat d’art font également partie de l’équipement standard des modèles de série actuels DS 3 Crossback, DS 4, DS 7 Crossback et DS 9.
140 years ago, on 25 October 1881, the Spanish painter and sculptor Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born. In the last years of his life, a coincidence led to the historic DS 19 of the then young journalist Mejido being painted by the artist himself in 1958. Since time immemorial, the fascination for art has been deeply rooted in the DNA of DS Automobiles and lives on in today’s partnerships and models.
The Parisian premium brand DS Automobiles has always been closely linked to the art scene. Today, this can be seen, among other things, in a partnership with the Louvre and also in the close cooperation with craft artists who work together with the DS designers in the DS Design Studio Paris to implement the artistic elements in the current models. That this love of art is deeply rooted in the brand DNA is shown by the story of the young journalist Mejido, whose DS 19 was painted by Pablo Picasso himself in 1958.
The story behind the photo of the painted DS goes back to 1955. A young Mexican journalist named Mejido was living in France and in the winter of 1958 tried to get a unique exclusive: an interview with Pablo Picasso, the brilliant Spanish painter. The latter, exiled by Franco’s dictatorship, was living on the Côte d’Azur at the time.
Knowing that Picasso was very reluctant to give interviews, the young and intrepid Mejido devised a ruse: he presented himself at the door of „La Californie“, the painter’s famous villa in Antibes, in the name of the „Centro Republicano Español de México“. This organisation helped people to escape and took in countless Spanish exiles in the country. Pablo Picasso was an avowed supporter of the Spanish Republic and therefore agreed to give the interview.
For his trip to the Côte d’Azur, Mejido had managed to borrow a brand new blue DS 19, in which he presented himself in the company of some of Picasso’s friends. The latter was surprised by the enthusiasm of his young visitor, who claimed to have been sent to France by Spaniards living in exile in Mexico to interview him.
During the interview, Picasso took his leave for a few hours before returning to talk further about politics and art. „I have never stopped dreaming or painting,“ the painter then explained to the journalist, inviting him to follow him. The latter could not believe his eyes when he saw „The Garlands of Peace“ painted on the side of DS 19. The work depicted a family, flowers and a tree. Before the eyes of the stunned journalist, Picasso signed his work on one of the wings.
The scene was photographed by one of the people present and even today Mejido keeps numerous photos of the DS, Picasso and the group of friends who were part of the unusual artistic and now historic event.
On his return to Paris, Mejido bought the DS for $1,000 and immediately sold it on to a Paris art gallery for $6,000. Since then, the trace of the car has been lost and the journalist suspects that it must be in the hands of a private collector to this day.
The pictures of the DS were sent to Josep Palau i Fabre, a friend of the painter and director of the Picasso Foundation in Barcelona, who confirmed the authenticity of the photos and the painting. Even Rafael Inglada, Picasso’s biographer, stated that the photo of the car was indeed taken in the palm grove next to the villa „La Californie“.
DS in 2021: Close connection to the world of the arts
Even 63 years later, the DS brand has not lost its love of art. On the contrary: the Parisian premium brand is closely connected to the scene through numerous partnerships. With the special models DS 7 Crossback Louvre and DS 3 Crossback Louvre, DS has just presented two unique special editions that combine refinement, luxury and art. But loving details and craftsmanship are also standard in the current series models DS 3 Crossback, DS 4, DS 7 Crossback and DS 9.
