MOBILITY/MOTORCYCLE: Looking back to the future: The /5 series as a historical model
The new BMW R nineT /5
BMW R nineT /5: Exclusive anniversary model to mark the 50th birthday in 2019 of the /5 series and 50 years of BMW Motorrad manufacturing in Berlin.
Classic, genuine, original – and air-cooled. With the R nineT /5, the successful BMW Motorrad Heritage experience world has been supplemented by another offshoot with special historical roots: the anniversary model to mark the 50th birthday in 2019 of the legendary /5 series and the simultaneous start of BMW Motorrad production at the BMW plant in Berlin Spandau.
Looking back to the future: The /5 series as a historical role model.
In the 1960s, automobile production at BMW in Munich grew at an enormous pace, and the decision was made to build BMW motorcycles in Berlin Spandau from then on. 1969 saw the start of production there with around 400 employees and a new series: the /5 models R 50/5, R 60/5 and R 75/5. With a completely newly developed chassis and engine as well as a fresh, modern design, BMW sustainably fires up the emerging motorcycle market. The /5 models are an instant success, impressing with their driving dynamics on country roads and comfort when traveling.
The new BMW motorcycles fit perfectly into this era, which is characterized by a spirit of optimism, rock music and a strong sense of freedom. Accordingly, a wide range of bold, gaudy body colors is available for the new /5 models for the first time.
With the R nineT /5 anniversary model, however, BMW Motorrad is not only honoring the 50th birthday of the /5 series and, as it were, 50 years of BMW Motorrad production in Berlin Spandau. Rather, the R nineT /5, equipped with heated grips as standard, evokes memories of that time and revives the /5 models with nostalgic charm in a contemporary form.
Lovely details in the style of the /5 models for a coherent whole.
For example, with contemporary knee pads and a lavish paint job in Lupin blue metallic with smoke effect and double lined tank with an anniversary plaque. Chrome for the rear-view mirror and exhaust manifold are just as much a tribute to the historical model as the double seat bench contoured in the style of the /5 model with cross-embossing of the cover, retaining straps and white piping as well as the bellows of the front fork.
The coating of the engine, transmission, fork tubes, wheel hubs and wheel spokes in aluminum silver and components in black, such as the frame and the housing of the propeller shaft, are also true to the style of the legendary /5 models.
