MOBILITY/MOTORBIKES: BMW Motorrad: The new BMW R 1300 GS
„With the new BMW R 1300 GS, we will once again surprise the competition. It features an even wider spread of product substance and the reduction in complexity as well as vehicle weight, together with focused equipment, make it possible to showcase the essence of the boxer GS even more impressively. With a new engine, outstanding handling and convincing ride characteristics, it will set the pace both on and off the road.“
Thilo Fuchs, Series Manager Boxer models water-cooled.
The new BMW R 1300 GS: „Next level of GS“ with new boxer engine and new chassis with significantly reduced weight and all-round increased GS competence.
More than four decades ago, BMW Motorrad founded the new segment of touring enduros with the R 80 G/S. Since then, the BMW GS with boxer engine has been the undisputed leader of the competitive field. To ensure that this remains the case in the future, BMW Motorrad has opted for an almost completely new design for the new R 1300 GS, in which it has been possible to save a whopping 12 kg in weight compared to the predecessor model.
The centrepiece is once again the legendary two-cylinder boxer engine. The new design is more compact than ever before thanks to a gearbox located under the engine and a new arrangement of the camshaft drive. It develops 107 kW (145 hp) at 7 750 min-1 from exactly 1 300 cm3 and a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6 500 min-1, making it by far the most powerful BMW boxer engine ever produced in series.
At the centre of the new chassis is the sheet metal main frame made of steel which, in addition to a significant optimisation of the installation space, also has higher stiffness values than the predecessor model. The rear frame is now made of die-cast aluminium instead of the previous tubular steel construction. The new EVO-Telelever front wheel guide with flex element and the revised EVO-Paralever rear wheel guide ensure even more steering precision and driving stability.
New electronic suspension Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) with dynamic adjustment of damping and spring rate as well as load compensation as an optional extra ex works.
The previous electronic suspension Dynamic ESA Next Generation already offered a high level of driving safety and driving pleasure on a wide variety of terrains with dynamic adjustment of the damping and adjustable spring base at the rear. The new electronic Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) now goes one step further and combines dynamic adjustment of the front and rear damping with a corresponding adjustment of the spring rate („spring stiffness“) depending on the selected driving mode as well as driving conditions and manoeuvres. The automatic adjustment of the spring base ensures load compensation. This further enhances the driving experience on all surfaces. Whether solo, in pairs or with large luggage – DSA opens up even more driving safety, performance and comfort.
Adaptive ride height control and sports suspension as factory options.
Exclusively in conjunction with DSA as optional factory equipment, two further optional extras are available for the chassis of the new R 1300 GS: the new adaptive ride height control and the sports suspension.
With the adaptive ride height control, the new R 1300 GS offers fully automatic adjustment of the vehicle height depending on the operating condition, thus combining the greatest possible comfort without having to compromise on riding dynamics and lean angle clearance.
With 20 mm more suspension travel at the front and rear and an optional sporty, firm sports suspension specially developed for the GS, off-road riders get their money’s worth here.
Four driving modes now standard. Enduro“ riding mode for an enhanced off-road riding experience.
To adapt to individual rider preferences, the new R 1300 GS now offers four riding modes as standard instead of the previous three. With the two riding modes „Rain“ and „Road“, the riding characteristics can be adapted to most road conditions. With the „Eco“ riding mode, it is also possible to achieve the maximum range with one tank of fuel. The additional driving mode „Enduro“ enables an enhanced driving experience off paved roads with a targeted tuning for off-road operation.
Matrix LED headlights with innovative design as standard, state-of-the-art LED light units all round with indicators integrated into the hand guards and Headlight Pro as an optional extra ex works.
BMW Motorrad is regarded as the pioneer par excellence when it comes to motorcycling safety and related innovations. Accordingly, the new R 1300 GS offers a new, very small full-LED headlight with a new, unmistakable light icon as standard. This illuminates the road with an unrivalled bright, clear light and also ensures even better perception in traffic. The light unit consists of two LED units for low beam and high beam as well as additional LED units for daytime running light and position light respectively. State-of-the-art LED light units with newly designed LED indicators – integrated into the hand guard at the front, function-integrated at the rear – round off the lighting concept of the new R 1300 GS. With the special equipment „Headlight Pro“, the light of the standard Matrix LED headlight shines into the bend depending on the lean angle. In this way, bends are almost fully illuminated because the light is located where the motorbike is moving.
Riding Assistant with Active Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Change Warning (SWW) for safe and comfortable motorcycling.
The new BMW R 1300 GS is accompanied by the new Riding Assistant rider assistance option. It consists of the components Active Cruise Control (ACC), Front Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Change Warning (SWW). The Active Cruise Control (ACC) with integrated distance control can be used to set the desired driving speed and the distance to the vehicle in front. Front Collision Warning (FCW)
(Front Collision Warning FCW) with brake intervention is designed to prevent collisions and help reduce the severity of accidents. Lane Change Warning monitors the left and right lanes and can help to make a lane change safely and supports looking in the rearview mirror.
The new R 1300 GS: The highest level of touring and off-road competence in an attractive basic variant as well as the Triple Black, GS Trophy and Option 719 Tramuntana variants.
The new R 1300 GS is accompanied by a completely new design, which on the one hand is based on the traditional GS flyline, but at the same time reflects the extreme compactness as well as the significant weight reduction.
The flyline with a much flatter tank ramp of the new aluminium tank than on the predecessor models is largely responsible for the very dynamic, light and accessible appearance of the new R 1300 GS. Here, it was also possible to create a very sporty and dynamic accent with the continuous texture in the tank cover.
The basic variant of the new BMW R 1300 GS perfectly embodies what the BMW Motorrad development team has given the new edition of the GS legend: compact arrangement of the components, high functionality of the equipment and all this concentrated on the essentials. In Lightwhite uni, the new R 1300 GS appears well-trained in conjunction with its sharply drawn lines and very clean appearance and embodies the Boxer GS theme in a pristine way.
TripleBlack is the model variant of the Boxer GS that has been popular for many years. In this colour scheme, the new BMW R 1300 GS has a masculine attitude combined with exclusive surfaces.
The basic colour Racingblue metallic is the programme for the GS Trophy model variant. With the red and white tapes and lettering combined with the rear frame coated in white metallic matt, the GS Trophy stands for top performance and sporty off-road use.
With the model variant Option 719 Tramuntana, the new R 1300 GS shows its exclusive and technically sophisticated side. It combines cross-spoke wheels in gold with a high-quality paint finish in Aurelius Green metallic and high-quality milled aluminium parts.
