Richmond Hill/Canada. BMW Motorrad Canada presents the results of its very first motorbike customising project. Three talented customisers were equipped with BMW R 18 bikes for this project, and the three exclusive one-offs are now celebrating their world premiere.

Together with Roland Stocker, BMW Motorrad Heritage Project Manager, the customisers Jay Donovan from Victoria, British Columbia, Konquer Motorcycles from Kelowna, British Columbia and Augment Motorworks from Toronto, Ontario, presented their creations. „These projects show the importance of developing motorbikes that inspire creativity and serve as a good foundation for owners and builders alike,“ says Roland Stocker.

Stocker, who played a major role in the development of the R 18 and travelled to Canada for the presentation, was impressed not only by the motorbikes but also by the builders themselves. „The vision, craftsmanship and quality of work were very impressive, especially considering how young some of the customisers are,“ Stocker continued. „I was very pleased with the result.“

The R 18’s classic design and extravagant proportions make it an ideal base for customisation work. At the heart of the R 18 is the 1,802 cm³ „big boxer“ – the most powerful two-cylinder boxer engine ever used in a production motorbike.

„We wanted to demonstrate the potential of the R 18 and designed a project to do so,“ said Johann von Balluseck, Director BMW Motorrad Canada. „We selected customisers who would approach this project in different ways, hoping they would give us three very different styles – and that’s exactly what we got.“

The only requirements for the customisers were that the bikes remain operational and street legal. This summer, the three bikes will be included in a nationwide dealer tour that will visit locations across Canada.

The R 18 Future Café is a Jay Donovan study with a focus on handcrafted metalwork. Donovan’s design began with a desire to have the exhaust system pull up over the cylinder heads and end under the seat. A completely redesigned tank and top section in bright polished aluminium and shortened front and rear mudguards in contrasting black create an elongated and elegant look.

Augment Motorworks – R 18 Tattooed Chopper.

A fine paint job of classic tattoo motifs paired with a sissy bar, handmade headlight mount, mini ape hanger handlebar, Trumpet-style exhaust and custom seat transform the R 18 into a classic with light-hearted touches.
