Inspiriert von den früheren Helden der Rallye Paris-Dakar und ihren BMW Siegermaschinen präsentierte BMW Motorrad seinerzeit auf dem Wheels & Waves Festival eine vollkommen neue Interpretation der BMW R nineT – ganz im Geiste des Lebensgefühls von Wheels & Waves: die BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose.
Inspired by the former heroes of the Paris-Dakar Rally and their BMW winning machines, BMW Motorbike presented a completely new interpretation of the BMW R nineT at the Wheels & Waves Festival at the time – in the spirit of the Wheels & Waves lifestyle: the BMW Motorbike Concept Lac Rose.
„Seit ihrer Markteinführung ist die BMW R nineT eine beliebte Basis für Customizer und Veredeler, wie man auch bei Wheels & Waves sehen kann. Das macht uns sehr stolz, gleichzeitig spornt es uns an, für dieses Festival ebenfalls etwas zu schaffen, das man so von uns noch nicht gesehen hat.“, erläutert Edgar Heinrich, Leiter Design BMW Motorrad, den Hintergrund des Concept Bikes. „Die BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose ist unsere bewusst lockere und eigenständige Interpretation des Siegerbikes der Rallye Paris-Dakar von 1985 – im einzigartigen Spirit von Wheels & Waves und seinen Besuchern. Sie setzt die BMW R nineT in einen spannenden, neuen Kontext und zeigt, was Vorstellungskraft, Leidenschaft für die Historie unserer Marke und ein paar Modifikationen möglich machen.“
Lac Rose – Die letzte Etappe von Paris-Dakar.
Lac Rose ist der französische Name des rosafarbenen Salzsees Retba, 35 km nordöstlich von Dakar und weniger als einen Kilometer von der Atlantikküste entfernt. Nach den strapaziösen Etappen durch die Wüste endete dort die legendäre Rallye Paris-Dakar auf einem Podium direkt am See, inmitten der begeisterten Fans. Die BMW Werksmaschinen, modifiziert von der Firma HPN, erreichten Anfang bis Mitte der 1980er dieses Ziel dreimal in Folge als Erste. Zuletzt 1985 mit Gaston Rahier und der Startnummer 101.
BMW G/S trifft BMW R nineT.
Die BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose zeigt die typischen Merkmale der damaligen Siegermaschine auf Basis einer modernen, straßenorientierteren Version – bewusst ohne Anspruch auf herausragende Off-Road-Qualitäten. „Das Bike ist im Kern ein cooler und entspannter Roadster, mit einigen typischen Off-Road-Features, die es erlauben, auch abseits der Straße zu fahren und einem Feldweg ins Ungewisse zu folgen.“, führt Edgar Heinrich weiter aus. „Diese Kombination aus Customizing, Lässigkeit und Unkonventionalität machen dieses Bike so besonders.“
Das Windschild mit typischer Rallyeausstattung, die charakteristische Scheinwerfermaske mit hohem Kotflügel, ein großer Tank und eine kurze Rallye-Sitzbank sind klare Reminiszenzen an das Vorbild. Gemeinsam zeichnen sie die charakteristische, horizontale Flyline der damaligen BMW G/S-Maschinen und definieren damit die wesentlichen Proportionen der BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose. Höhere Federwege sowie Speichenräder mit Stollenreifen sind daher ebenso obligatorisch wie der Farbton Signalrot über Alpinweiss und die Startnummer 101.
Im Zentrum der ausbalancierten Proportionen ruht BMW typisch der Zweizylinder-Boxer-Motor mit Kardanantrieb, eingefasst von einem kontrastfarbigen Rohrrahmen, der ebenfalls dem Vorbild nachempfunden ist. Elemente wie Steinschlagschutzgitter vor dem Scheinwerfer und dem Ölkühler sowie der Unterfahrschutz mit markantem Lochmuster greifen die kompromisslos funktionsgetriebene Gestaltung von damals auf und transportieren sie gestalterisch in die heutige Zeit. High-Performance-Parts sowie exklusiv gestaltete Details wie die Ventildeckel zeigen den BMW Anspruch an Verarbeitung und Fertigungsqualität und runden das Erscheinungsbild der BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose hochwertig ab. Die exklusiv gestaltete BMW Fahrerausstattung mit Anzug und Helm – basierend auf dem BMW Enduro Helm – ergänzt die Designstudie BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose im passenden Stil.
„Since its market launch, the BMW R nineT has been a popular basis for customisers and refiners, as can also be seen at Wheels & Waves. This makes us very proud, and at the same time it spurs us on to also create something for this festival that has not yet been seen from us in this way,“ Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad, explains the background to the concept bike. „The BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose is our deliberately relaxed and independent interpretation of the winning bike of the 1985 Paris-Dakar Rally – in the unique spirit of Wheels & Waves and its visitors. It puts the BMW R nineT in an exciting new context and shows what imagination, passion for our brand’s history and a few modifications can make possible.“
Lac Rose – The final stage of Paris-Dakar.
Lac Rose is the French name of the pink salt lake Retba, 35 km north-east of Dakar and less than a kilometre from the Atlantic coast. After the gruelling stages through the desert, the legendary Paris-Dakar Rally ended there on a podium right by the lake, amidst the enthusiastic fans. The BMW factory machines, modified by the HPN company, reached this finish first three times in a row in the early to mid-1980s. The last time was in 1985 with Gaston Rahier and the starting number 101.

The BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose shows the typical features of the winning machine of that time on the basis of a modern, more road-oriented version – deliberately without any claim to outstanding off-road qualities. „The bike is a cool and relaxed roadster at its core, with some typical off-road features that allow you to go off-road and follow a dirt track into the unknown,“ Edgar Heinrich continues. „This combination of customising, casualness and unconventionality is what makes this bike so special.“
The windshield with typical rally equipment, the characteristic headlight mask with high mudguard, a large tank and a short rally seat are clear reminiscences of the prototype. Together they draw the characteristic horizontal flyline of the BMW G/S machines of the time and thus define the essential proportions of the BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose. Higher suspension travel as well as spoked wheels with lugged tyres are therefore just as obligatory as the colour signal red over Alpine white and the starting number 101.
At the centre of the balanced proportions rests the two-cylinder boxer engine with cardan drive, typical of BMW, framed by a contrasting coloured tubular frame, which is also modelled on the prototype. Elements such as the stone guard in front of the headlamp and the oil cooler as well as the underride guard with its striking perforated pattern take up the uncompromisingly function-driven design of yesteryear and transport it into the present day in terms of design. High-performance parts and exclusively designed details such as the valve covers demonstrate the BMW standard of workmanship and manufacturing quality and round off the appearance of the BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose to a high standard. The exclusively designed BMW rider equipment with suit and helmet – based on the BMW Enduro helmet – complements the BMW Motorrad Concept Lac Rose design study in matching style.
